The 1919 World Series was a match between the Chicago White Sox and the Cincinnati Reds. Usualy the world series is the best of 7 game but this year they decided to try a best of 9 game mostly to increase the national interest in the great sport of baseball. This game was said to be fixed from the very first pitch of the first game. The Reds where the underdogs in this Series and no one (Besides the people in on the fix) expected them to win.
In the first game of the series the Reds pitcher, Dutch Ruether, Put on a great performance that lead the reds to a victory. At the same time though the White Sox put on an outstanding show losing in a somewhat questionable fashion 9-1. It was all the same in game 2 with a pathetic performance by the white sox losing 4-2. In the third game of the series Chicago’s up and coming rookie player, Dickey Kerr, was starting. Dickey Kerr seemed to be unknowing of the scandal, or at least refused to participate in it, threw a three hit game putting the White Sox back into the talk of the town with a 3-0 victory over the reds. The 4th and 5th game were much like the first two. The Reds threw 2 shutouts against the White Sox winning game 4 with pitcher Jimmy Ring (2-0) and game 5 with pitcher Hod Eller (5-0)
After the players who were fixing the games were not receiving there money that they were promised from Arnold Rothstein the players decided to strike back and attempt to win the next few games. In games 6 and 7 the White Sox dominated the Reds winning 5-4 and 4-1. Arnold Rothstein, getting nervous about the game had men break into Lefty Williams house and threaten to hurt his family if he did not throw the game the following day. In game 8 the White Sox lost 10-5 with a terrible effort by Lefty Williams, loosing the world series.
