The 1919 White Sox are commonly refered to as the Black Sox for their part in throwing the World Series. The term Black sox, though, existed before there was any proof or investigation of the fixing of the series. The team was originally given this name because the owner of the team, Charles Comiskey, a ungenorous man would not pay for the players to wash their uniforms instead he forced the players to pay for their own uniforms to be washed. The players went on strike against this and just did not wash their uniforms so as the White Sox played more games their uniforms became dirtier and dirtier from all the dirt, dust, and sweat that made the uniforms a much darker shade.
